Commercial Study Summary Orego-Stim® Supports Improved Growth Performance of Beef Cattle

SUMMARY

  • Profitable beef production relies on achieving good growth rates and efficient feed conversion.
  • This study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of Orego-Stim® Powder (OSP) on the growth performance of Aberdeen Angus cross beef cattle fed a forage-based ration.

  • The addition of OSP to feed improved growth rates, resulting in a return on investment of 2.5:1.

COMMERCIAL STUDY DESIGN

A commercial study was undertaken in the UK during winter 2021/2022, to evaluate the effect of Orego-Stim® Powder (OSP) on the performance of growing Aberdeen Angus cross beef cattle fed a forage-based (grass silage and maize silage) ration. A total of 140 housed cattle aged 260 to 280 days were split into two groups, with two pens per treatment. The control group were fed a basal total mixed ration (TMR) and the OSP group were fed a TMR with OSP included to provide 3g/head/day. Cattle were weighed every 4 to 6 weeks throughout the 4.5 month study period.

RESULTS

22307401
The addition of OSP to feed resulted in:
  • A 5% improvement in daily liveweight gain (p<0.05) (Fig. 1).

  • An additional 4.5kg of total liveweight gain throughout the study period (Fig. 2).

  • No notable health issues.

  • More profitable beef production, with a return on investment of 2.5:1.

  • Potential for higher throughput of cattle, and an extra £55,000 in revenue.

This study demonstrated that Orego-Stim® may be included in forage-based beef rations to support improved growth performance and overall farm profitability.
