Necrotic Enteritis in Poultry

Necrotic enteritis (NE) is a common bacterial poultry disease, affecting approximately 40% of commercial broiler flocks and costing the industry up to an estimated $6 billion annually. Clinical outbreaks can cause mortality rates of up to 50%. In contrast, the subclinical form can lead to negative effects on growth rate and feed efficiency due to intestinal damage and impairment of nutrient absorption.  With feed being the highest input cost, poor conversion increases costs and reduces profitability.  Because of a lack of obvious symptoms, subclinical disease often remains untreated and continuously harms production.

The disease is commonly seen in broilers from around 2-6 weeks and is caused by the over-proliferation of Clostridium perfringens, with toxins damaging the gut and liver. Coccidia infection is often cited as a major predisposing factor, but poor feed quality and composition can also lead to the creation of a favourable environment for C. perfringens.  Cases of necrotic enteritis have been on the rise over recent years, the primary reason is thought to be a reduction in the use of antibiotics and ionophores.
